Discover the scenery and history of the Forgotten World in a truly unique ‘soft adventure’ experience in the Ruapehu region.
Hidden within the Forgotten World for close to a century, 140 kilometres of abandoned railway weaves through the historic and rugged landscape between Okahukura (near Taumarunui), through Whangamomona and on to Stratford. Over 98 bridges and through 24 hand-dug tunnels, whether it is on the railway by RailCart or RailBike, or along the Whanganui River by JetBoat, Forgotten World Adventures are for those young at heart.
A variety of tours are offered, with a choice of where to begin your tour. Most begin and end at our depot in Taumarunui, but selected tours depart from Whangamomona or Douglas (just north of Stratford). Select the time you have available to enjoy this remote but magnificent part of the North Island. Join us for a shorter 3 hour tour, a full day tour, or up to 4 days. We have three modes of transport. Our cleverly adapted self-driven RailCarts allow a relaxed and leisurely journey but for those who prefer more a more active mode, there are our RailBikes. Our Jetboat links with some of the rail tours so you can enjoy the best of both worlds, but if you would prefer to travel deep into the Whanganui National Park, head to the Bridge to Nowhere. Our local tour guides will share their knowledge and passion for the area when you stop at various points of interest along the way. Whether you are travelling by cart, bike or boat there is a Travellers Guide Booklet provided for you to read extra information about where you are. Enjoy our hospitality as we serve snacks or meals, depending on the length of your tour, in true rural New Zealand style. We look forward to seeing you in the Forgotten World.
