Discover the scenery and history of the Forgotten World in a truly unique ‘soft adventure’ experience in the Ruapehu region.
Hidden within the Forgotten World for close to a century, 142 kilometres of abandoned railway weaves through the historic and rugged landscape between Okahukura (near Taumarunui), through Whangamomona and on to Stratford. Over 98 bridges and through 24 hand-dug tunnels, whether it is on the railway by RailCart, or along the Whanganui River by JetBoat, or Helicopter and hike deep into the Whanganui National Park. Forgotten World Adventures are for those young at heart.
A variety of tours are offered, with a choice of where to begin your tour. The majority of our tours start/ finish at our base in Taumarunui (the Forgotten World Motel), however selected tours start/ finish in Whangamomona or Douglas (just north of Stratford). We offer a variety of tours, join us for either a half day, full day or up to 2 day tour. We have three modes of transport. Our cleverly adapted self-driven RailCarts allow a relaxed and leisurely journey, our Jetboat links with some of the rail tours so you can enjoy the best of both worlds, or Helicopter deep into the Whanganui National Park and walk to the Bridge to Nowhere.
Our local tour guides will share their knowledge and passion for the area as you stop at interesting places along the way. Enjoy our hospitality as we serve snacks or meals, depending on the length of your tour, in true rural New Zealand style. We look forward to welcoming you in the Forgotten World.
